Cross-country

Yesterday afternoon Kiara,Tangiroimata and me had cross-country the reason was that we had it in the afternoon is because we were 9 and 9 year olds run with the seniours.when we got there where you ran the 9 year old boys went first and the the 9 year old girls went second when we lined up I felt nerveous and then we streched to lose in our bodys and then the clapper clapped I started running and by the time I got around the second corner people started walking so passed all of them when I got to the part where you cross over the fence I heard heaps of people cheering then I came to the prickly thorns went past those and then I came to the gooey mud I got stuck in the mud and when I pulled out my leg I fell over and then I fell over 5 more times but I still kept going then it came to a course leader and I saw all of these shoes so I dropped them right there and my feet felt better so then I carried myself to the fence it came to the end I felt really happy all these people were cheering for me and at the end I was exchasted.

Selwyn School is now SunSmart Accredited!

What this means:

In Terms 4 & 1...

Children and staff will be required to wear a hat when playing or learning outside when at school.

Children and staff will be encouraged to wear sunscreen.
Children without a hat will need to play in the shade.

SunSmart Bucket hats will be on sale at school later this term. They will come in a variety of cool colours and sizes to suit everyone. Or alternatively, you can provide a SunSmart hat from home. Bucket, Legionnaire and wide brimmed hats are great. Hats will stay at school so they are readily available when needed.

Caps are NOT a SunSmart hat as they do not protect the ears or neck, so please do not send caps to school.

Selwyn School SunSmart Policy 2009

Rationale:
Excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR) from the sun causes sunburn, skin damage and increases the risk of skin cancer. New Zealand, along with Australia, has the highest melanoma rates in the world. One or more episodes of sunburn in childhood and adolescence have been shown to increase the risk of melanoma later in life.

Throughout New Zealand sun protection is required from October to March inclusive, especially between the hours of 11am and 4pm. Therefore, this policy applies only during Terms 1 and 4.
Note: There are also benefits from sun exposure, including Vitamin D absorption, which is important for the development of healthy bones, muscles and teeth.

During the winter months, students should be encouraged to actively enjoy the sun. This policy is adopted from ( DATE ) so that children attending Selwyn School are protected from harmful UV radiation from the sun.

As part of general SunSmart strategies, during Terms 1 and 4, between 11am and 4pm, our school will:

Behaviour
• Require children to wear broad-brimmed (min 7.5cms), legionnaire or bucket hats (min 6 cm. brim, deep crown) when they are outside (e.g. interval, lunch, sport, excursions and activities).
• Provide extra hats for children to borrow if appropriate.
• Encourage a "No Hat, Play in the Shade" rule where children without hats play in shaded areas.
• Work with wider school community to promote students’ use of SPF 30+ broad spectrum sunscreen (*).
• Encourage children to wear clothing that protects the skin from the sun (e.g.
sleeves and collars).
• Require staff to role model SunSmart behaviour, particularly the use of appropriate hats, within the school grounds and during outdoor school activities. • Regularly publicise and reinforce the SunSmart Policy, for example, through newsletters, parent meetings, student and teacher activities.
• Inform parents of the SunSmart Policy at enrolment, especially the use of appropriate hats, clothing, SPF 30+ sunscreen, and encourage parents to practise SunSmart behaviour themselves.

Curriculum
• Incorporate SunSmart education and activities at all levels when delivering the curriculum.

Environment
• Work towards developing and improving existing shade, particularly in areas where students congregate. Shade can be both built and natural (e.g. constructed shelter and trees).
• Whenever possible schedule outdoor activities and sports events before 11am (**).
• Organize outdoor activities to be held in areas with plenty of shade whenever possible.

Reinforcement and evaluation
• Ensure ongoing assessment of SunSmart behaviour, shade provision, and curriculum emphasis.
• Review of the SunSmart policy by the Board of Trustees and Principal at least every 3 years.
• *Sunscreen should not be the sole or primary form of protection.
• **The Cancer Society recommends holding school excursions early in the day to cut down the exposure to UV radiation. Plan them for venues where adequate shade is available or alternatively provide your own shade by taking umbrellas or tents.

At the WareHouse

Fruit in Schools Petition

In June next year (2010) our fruit will STOP!

The government has decided not to fund it after that. Please add your full name, address, and phone number in the comment box, and we will print them out and add them to our petition, asking that the government continues to supply our schools with fruit, as the benefits to the nutritional health of our children is obvious.

At soda springs

On Saturday night at 6:00 I went to soda springs. There was a water fall hole. At the place there is a rockey slide. On the other side there is a (lake) river and it is yucky. But on the other side there is a nice hot steep pool.It has a steep steep hole.It is by the grass.Would you like to get back out and go on the slide I said to my brother. Okay then lets go. WOW. We said a big .STOMACH. Came it was huge. She stepped here and stepped there. Mum ,Mikayla ,aunty Kay there was a big lady there. She is pregant oh look shes in the pool now you can go back now yahow we said but be queit. So when it was 9:00 we had to get out. So we got dressed and put on our socks and shoes and jumped in the truck. And we got some blankets and slept in the lounge and we were happy watcking t.v and eating ice-cream and chocolate by Tangiroimata

When we were playing Mamaku the ball was gritty and sore on my hands. I said to my friend that was by me when we were all playing our game. On the last game the team was to cold to play so they defaulted, We went "Yeah"!. There was a new trophy this girl won it. But I was ok with it because she deserved it..

This is Wayne dc on News. A dinosaur has been discovered in old Grandma Jones kitchen .She found it when she went to make a cup of tea . Scientists have confirmed it is a medium sized T Rex . Grandma Jones said it has been sniffing the toaster for about two hours! The Reporters are wondering how it got there. The scientist said that it walked in to the swamp and there must have been sinking sand that must have led to Grandma Jone's kitchen. The Scientist believe that the toaster is an unusual thing to the dinosaur. Keep watching for our exciting discover 3 News.

On athletics day we went and lined up out side our class then went to the feild. My group went to sprints. I came last. My mum and dad came.

After sprints we went to high jump. I came last in that to but while I was at high jump I hurt my leg but not in any odd place, it was behind my knee.

After high jump I was lucky because I didnt have to run because the activity was shot-put. In shot-put I came last as well.

After shot-put my group went to the block run. We went to block run after morning tea, as well as coming last in sprints, high jump and shot-put, I came last in the block run but I don't really care.

In long jump I nearly came 3rd but I needed to jump a bit longer but my legs were not long enough.

Evil Praying Mantis

In the weekend my brother, Mum, Dad and I went to Waiuku to visit Nana Rae and Grandad Pat.

Adam, Mum and I went to the park. On the way there we passed a female praying mantis. Mum said she had a belly full of eggs. I asked, "Where is the Dad?" Mum said, "In her stomach. Once they have mated she bites his head off, eats that and then eats the rest of his body. It helps her feed the eggs. It has good nitrition."

I said, "How harsh!" Adam said, "Yuck." Mum just laughed. I said, "Evil praying mantis. Poor Dad. I would rather be a female. In fact I wouldn't want to be one anyway. It must hurt having your head bitten off! It must be like getting executed but by your wife. Pretty mean!! Bye evil praying mantis. Stay where you are so we can talk on the way back." I yelled................but when we came back she was not there!

My Trip Back To Rotorua

On the way back to Waiouru we stopped at the army museum. Cory and I played on the army tanks. We got a little bit bored. So we sat down with Dad and took some photos on my camera. We took photos of Mount Ruapehu then Nana called Dad on his cellphone. Cory and I got to talk to Nana then Mum came about ten minutes later. We said goodbye to Dad and drove to Turangi where we had Burger King for lunch. Then Mum called Paul and said we'd be home in an hour or so. We drove to Taupo where we had an icecream. Then we came in to Rotorua and came home.

In Room 13 we were learning how to do illustrations. Mrs Ball showed us how. We had to think about the main characters and the setting when we made our design. Kiara won first prize for her awesome design, and Fern ad Daisy earned 2nd equal.
